Cypress Hill - Rise Up

Wow, this is the first "normal" week of hip hop releases we've had in 2010 with a mix of major releases, small fry and folks in between. Honestly, I never did much with comparing sales figures and charts on a more granular level but now would be an interesting time to do that. Who knows? Depending on how things go with other projects I may get back into some more serious analysis but there's a ways to go between here and there.

It really looks like people are giving up on releasing albums. We're now in April, most of the big sellers on Amazon are still classics and other old releases and this is the first time in 5 years that I've seen that. And I've never had such short lists of new releases this far into the year before either. At first, I thought I was just missing things and it's true that I haven't been able to get on top of digital only releases as well as more traditional releases but the last few weeks have convinced me that I'm not part of the bigger problem!

Diabolic - Liar & A Thief

Add the low number of releases to the fact that albums are charting higher on lower sales and you've got a situation in which, if someone smartly exploited the gaps in releases and other factors, folks that have never been in the Top 10 before could start appearing. I think is particularly good news for indie labels that have their act together, for example Stones Throw or Rhymesayers. But I haven't seen anybody really exploiting the dead dates. It will be interesting to see if folks pick up on it next year depending, of course, on whether or not they recognize what's going on and focus accordingly.
